Woodlands & Wellness

I have been re-reading The Nature Fix: Why nature makes us happier, healthier and more creative by Florence Williams (W.W.Norton and Company, 2017) with an eye to noting factoids and studies linking trees, woodlands and wellness. Here are three of many described in the book:

  • A Toronto study showed the higher a neighbourhood’s tree density, the lower incidence of heart and metabolic disease.
  • Research in Japan found that the phytoncides we breath in forests (esp coniferous) are antibacterial.
  • A study in Finland found that emotionally restorative feelings were noticeable after as little as 15 minute walk in forest setting.
