This is a few month’s ago “old news” but nevertheless relevant info to those interested in Bruce Grey Woodlands, so posting the link to this local article: A farm corporation located Ayton in was recently fined $10,000 after pleading guilty to clear cutting a woodlot property in southern Bruce County (read full article on southwesternontario.ca)
Rather than a fine, perhaps the farm corporation should have been required to restore the woodlot by replanting the mix of species that were clear cut. Otherwise, the fine could just be seen as the cost of acquiring some additional arable land. Or, alternatively, the fine might be perceived as just another mechanism to raise revenue with no real environmental benefit. Restoration is a far better deterrent.
