Events 2015

October 24, 2015 – Cedar Stand Management Workshop, on the Lindsay Tract, Northern Bruce Peninsula. We had a great turnout of members head up to The Bruce and dodge the forecast rain to enjoy a fascinating look at a cedar stand under active harvest, followed by a visit to see a stand that was harvested 12 years prior. Many thanks go out to logging contractor Tim Liverance and his son (who demonstrated the harvester).

September 12, 2015 – BGWA Annual Members’ BBQ, at Alan Park Management Unit, between Hanover and Durham. We had 60+ members come out to enjoy good food, good company, and interesting educational opporunities: a guided Tree ID walk by our own Donna Lacey, and a guided Mushroom Foraging hike by Hillary Hatzipetrakos of Fungi Unveiled.

August 16, 2015 – Heritage Farm & Steam Show, in Paisley. Based on results from the recent poll on association name, the current Board has decided to retain the name Bruce Grey Woodlot Association (BGWA). With time limitations around educational events that we put on the organization showed a presence at the Hertitage Days  Weekend using one of the old organization name banners as the Board now works to incorporate the new name with a logo and create an updated display booth with our newly confirmed name. We are proud of the educational work that our organization puts on, special thanks to Ron, Doug, Harvey and all others who were able to participate.

July 11, 2015 – Tour of Rural Rootz, just west of Wiarton.Ten enthusiastic BGWA members enjoyed a beautiful hike through the gardens and forest led by Tom Ashman. The trail we followed, which joins a Bruce Trail satellite trail, contains some of the greatest examples of Escarpment ecology found along the Bruce Trail. There were numerous stops along the way where the group discussed the flora, fauna and geology of the area. There were many questions from the interested group and a great time was had by all. The hike ended back at the gardens with some refreshments provided by Dee. Many of the participants chose to stay awhile to explore the grounds and gardens further. Special thanks again to Tom and Dee Ashman for welcoming our group into their oasis.
